The blessed Lord Shri Ram had incarnated to put an end to the demon Ravana's atrocities, but to do so He had to get Rudra Amsa, said His family Guru, Vasishta Maharishi and Maha Guru Agasthiar. They also gave Him the procedures for getting Rudramsa. So Lord Rama did the appropriate Shiva Linga worship procedures, as suggested by the Maharishis, to the Kayarohana Shiva Linga in the Kumbakonam sacred space and got Rudra Amsa.
