Siddha Sathguru Venkataraman said that the Siddha secret about the number 14 is that it completes and makes whole whatever it refers to.
14 is one of the numbers with this great spiritual potential to make something whole and bestow completeness.
Thus there are 14 Maheswara Sutras that make whole and complete all of creation.
14 and Hanuman
14 is also the number of ChathurMukha Anjaneya Hanuman, who will accept the position of being the next Brahma. The deity form of this manifestation of Hanuman, known as Paripoorna Anjaneya and ChathurMukha Jaya Maruthi Hanuman, will have four faces just like Lord Brahma.
Why is 14 the number of this manifestation of Hanuman? The organization of the 14 "loka" worlds (bhu, bhuvar, suvar, ... athala, vithala, suthala, ...) is the responsibility of Brahma. And thus 14 is also the number of Paripoorna Anjaneya (Chathur Mukha Jaya Maruthi Hanuman) who will be the next Brahma.
At the end of the "14 kalpakaala" time period during which ChathurMukha Paripoorna Anjaneya Hanuman will reign as the next Brahma, a time period known as "Visvaboothi Kalpakaalam" will begin.
Further, it is Hanuman's name that is chanted to bring any "nama kitan" devotional singing to its completion. It is customary to sing a Hanuman song and then end the kirtan session with Anjaneya Moorthi ki jai or Anjaneya Maharaj ki jai or Hanuman Maharaj ki jai. This is also done in homam fire ceremonies where the final offering is made to Lord Hanuman to complete the fire ceremony.
Thus 14 and completion are very relevant to the divine topic of Lord Hanuman.
14 and Daily Life.
14 "Thithi" Days.
Even in our daily lives, the number 14 plays an important role. Our life on earth marches through a progression of 14 unique "thithi" days (from Prathamai to Chathurdasi), bounded on either side by the Amavasya New Moon Day and the Pournami Full Moon Day, which make up one phase of the moon. Each human life progresses through a series of these phases of the moon, with every waxing and every waning phase of the moon having 14 unique "thithi" days. Each one of these 14 "thithi" days (that our lives march through) has its own unique spiritual significance, as explained in great detail by Siddha Sathguru Venkataraman in his "thousand day blog" from April 2004 to February 2007. Thus the number 14 is relevant not just in the realm of the deities but also in our daily lives. As we have said many times in our publications, each of these phases (approximately 14.75 days) is the first substantial building block of time within which a human being can achieve something of reasonable spiritual significance. This is why we have said that whatever spiritual practice you emabark on, do it without break at least for a minimum of one full "paksham"." The word "paksham" refers to one full phase of the moon, either waxing or waning, and spans approximately 14.75 days.
14-th Day Deepam = Hanuman Deepam
The "Brahmotsava" festival, that is celebrated in every temple, marks the most important celebration for that temple. This "Brahmotsave practice" was first begun by Lord Brahma in Ani Annamalai (Adi Annamalai), a sacred space (in Arunachala) where He did intense "tapasya" spiritual austerities. From the first day (flag hoisting day) of the Great Karthigai Deepam Festival, which is the Brahmotsava celebration of the Arunachaleswar Temple, the 14-th day, when the Anjaneya (Hanuman) Deepam is lit, marks the completion of this Brahmotsava for the residents of Brahma Loka. After this, the Pitru Exalted Ancestral Beings, Gandharvas, Kimpurushas and such advanced celestial beings will continue the worship process in their subtle forms.
